New Year Goals – 2017 Financial Goals

Hi all, seems like every man and his dog are writing what goals they want to achieve in the next year and what better time or place to do that than right here, right now. So this post will talk about my financial goals for 2017.

I have put a little thought into how I want to track my progress over the next year. I might break it up into financial years, so it is easier for me to follow up. For those who are not that familiar with financial year, here in Australia we use financial year which spans from 1st July to 30th of June. So for my goals, I will be focusing on things I can achieve basically in 6 months.

Now that we are all on the same page, lets take a look at what I would like to achieve in the remainder of the 2016/2017 financial year. Here are my Financial Goals for 2017.

Goal 1: 10% portfolio increase

Since my first share purchase in October, I have been able to gain a little over 4% increase in my small portfolio. I would like to increase this by a minimum of 10% by the end of financial year (EOFY), which is by 30th of June 2017.

Goal 2: Invest at least $5000 in the market.

Now that my car has been fully paid off from financing, I believe I should be able to increase the amount I put into my brokerage account every fortnight (2 weeks). This should take me pretty close to 10k in the market in total which is an exciting milestone for me.

Goal 3: Save over $8000 in cash towards my future house deposit

I currently try to save roughly $750 from every fortnights pay to put down towards a house. This is a fair chunk of my fortnightly pay so this is a high priority for myself.

Goal 4: Get Paid My First Dividend

I haven’t been paid a dividend yet, although this one is sure to happen, it will be exciting, none the less. I have already bought a couple shares which I have written a post about; here and here. I should receive a dividend from one of them in the near future I believe.

Goal 5: Average over 50 views on my blog per day.

Now this doesn’t sound like much, but remember this page is not even a week old. It’s in it’s early stages so I hope once it gets going, then people may follow. I believe 50 per day is achievable and I would like to get to that.

Overall, I am looking for personal and financial growth in and out of my brokerage account. I hope everyone had a great new years night and an even better new years day. Discuss below what your goals are for 2017, I am very interested in what others have to contribute. All the best.

Thanks for the comment. I already have some invested in Air New Zealand and they typically pay out in March. So if all goes well, I’ll have that one ticked off early. Cheers

Good job setting the goals. Another way to do this is to write-up a basic business plan that guides your investment decisions. This is what I did when I first started 7-years ago. It was a very basic plan that reminded me of why I am investing and what I should or should not do. It kept me on track through all these years. The plan has evolved over the years but the basic goals and principles are still the same.

Yes end of the year is a good time to look back and see how much progress was made. It’s a time to pat yourself on the back for the progress you made and also time to reflect back on any mistakes. I just posted my own year end summary today.

That’s a good idea really. I know it’s easy to lose track of what your goals are and to be investing just for the sake of it. I’ll definitely get that in place. I’ll also read your goals, I’m always interested in what other people want to achieve. Cheers

Loving all the goals. You’ll get there with the 50 pageview goal as long as you keep interacting, getting your name out there, and writing kick ass content. “If you build it, they will come.”

Big fan of the financial goals, especially #2 and #3 because those are actions you can directly control. It is up to you to invest the capital in the market and it is up to you to save the $8k and transfer the funds to your savings account. You are not dependent on the market climbing or any outside factors impacting to rely on your success.

Best of luck in 2017. If you work hard enough, good things are bound to happen!

      Really appreciate it Bert.
I too like the idea of being accountable for my own goals. That way I can’t blame the market for being slow or losses for taking it all away. This one is on me. I hope I can achieve what I wish and be sure to keep an eye out as I will be posting updates here quite regularly.
Appreciate the time you put in leaving comments. Cheers

I just stopped by because someone told me your trying to hit 50 page views this month ;-). Nice goals, all attainable too, which is important. To Lanny’s point, writer good content and get out there and visit other blogs. I get a lot of traffic from comments I’ve made on other blogs.

BTW – I really like your goals checklist you show on your homepage. Seeing them everyday is a great way to keep them fresh in your mind. Best of luck in 2017.

Thanks for that! I hope I can get an average of 50 views per day. So far I’m well on track to smash through that quite easily. I’ll continue to write original content and comment on other blogs.
I like the layout too. I think it’s good to be held accountable for my goals. So far so good! Cheers

Appreciate the comment. I currently average 80 views per day but will check this one off once that is the case for a month or so. Cheers
